MISTER TRAP by Mark Batongmalaque & Chet Glaze is a variation on the Warka Water Tower designed by Arturo Vittori. When presented with the opportunity to participate in OPAF 21, Mark & Chet brainstormed a few different ideas; Camping, Housing, Vagrancy, & many others, ultimately settling on the idea of Traps. Initially the OPAF project was going to be a series of traps built by both, calling back to the works of Andreas Slominski & Lee Bontecou, & the lifestyle of Dick Proenneke. After recalling reading of an article on the Warka Towers from 2015, Mark & Chet decided to propose the construction of the tower as a collaborative effort.
The least amount of research into the actual tower, aside from the name & a few pictures online, was conducted. This in part is crucial to the conceptualization & execution of the tower by the pair. The less we know, the more we discover.
The tower is constructed from locally sourced, wild bamboo that was harvested by Mark & Chet in a Riverside, CA tributary. Other materials include readily available items from various merchants. The effectiveness of the tower is a mystery to us. We'll find out.
